Text Box: Message from the Chairman

Dear Members and Supporters of BEBA,

In May, we celebrated our tenth anniversary, marking a decade of work towards improving Egypt’s business environment and enhancing trade between Egypt and the UK.

We published our Tenth Anniversary report, distributed at our Annual General Assembly Meeting, also available by contacting our office, or digitally on our website. The theme of our yearly Gala Night, held at the Mena House Oberoi, was "Partners through Time". Four hundred guests from the business community enjoyed great food, atmosphere, and

live entertainment at this very special night. We move ahead focusing on gathering the best economic and industrial practices from around the world, from both the public and the private sectors, as well as developing ways to implement these ideas in Egypt.

At the dinner held on June 7th, in the honor of the Minister of Civil Aviation, Air Marshall Sahfik prime concern was modernizing civil aviation in Egypt, including investment opportunities, involving the private sector. We are proud to announce that BEBA has forged a special partnership with Egypt Air that will allow BEBA members up to 50% discounts on both first and business class. Please contact the office for further details.

BEBA proudly hosted Sir Digby Jones, Chairman of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), for a business luncheon on June 26th. Sir Digby Jones spoke about collaboration efforts between the UK and Egypt and the means to improve the environment for businesses in both countries.

As part of our efforts to promote Egypt’s export capacity, we are also sponsoring an integrated export training programme with the Foreign Trade Training Centre. This project will include training in international marketing, supply chain management, and many other areas. BEBA members have a special discount, as the Industrial Modernization Centre will pay 80% of the program’s cost. If you wish to register for the above mentioned offer please contact our office.

On July 5th our partners at the Egyptian British Chamber of Commerce celebrated their 25th anniversary at their Annual Conference in London. Several Ministers from the Egyptian Government spoke on panels about the privatization of Egypt’s Central Bank, the insurance industry after the GATS agreement, and Egypt’s construction sector.

The jointly held meeting of BEBA and the UNDP took place on the 10th of July, to showcase 2005's National Human Development Report. On the 12th the UNDP met for the second time to open a dialogue with 30 of BEBA’s Members with great ties to CSR efforts in Egypt to glean valuable data and accumulate it for the NHDR. The meeting was a success for both groups, as some brilliant ideas were exchanged.

We look forward to seeing you at these upcoming events! May we continue collaborate together to promote greater trade between our two countries, aspiring prosperity for both our nations.

Mohamed M. Nosseir

More than 42 years of successful oil and gas operations in Egypt,
is indeed a compelling motivation to create an even more successful future.
To date, BP has been responsible for the production of almost 40% of Egypt’s entire oil production, and invested close to $14 billion, making us the single largest foreign investor in the country. While we continue to be active as a major oil producer in the Gulf of Suez and in the Western Desert, over the last few years we have also built our position as one of the main players in the new phase of Egypt’s hydrocarbon industry.
We are also committed to a wide-ranging social investment programme. The focus of our programme has been on education, training, and skills acquisition. In all that we do we are committed to follow the policies on ethical conduct, employee relations, HSSE, control and finance.
We continuously strive to live up to our aspiration of no accidents, no harm to people, and no damage to the environment.
